Product Data Safety Sheet - Styptic Pencil
1. Identification of product and company
Product and uses: Styptic pencil, consisting of a stick of aluminium sulphate contained within a plastic holder and case, for medicinal use as a haemostatic for superficial wounds and abrasions, and relief from insect bites and stings. It is for topical (external) use only and must be used according to instructions. Not to be taken internally.
Special notes: The styptic pencil consists of an active chemical component as well as its plastic holder, case and packaging. The latter accounts for a significant weight proportion of the whole. Where appropriate references are made in this text the information given relates only to the chemical component.
Company name: Bray Group Ltd.
Company address: Regal Way, Faringdon, Oxfordshire, SN7 7BX, UK.
Emergency phone: + 44 (0) 1367 240736.
Emergency fax: + 44 (0) 1367 242625.
2. Composition and information (chemical ingredients only)
Chemical identity: Aluminium Sulphate BP (hydrated form with 51 to 59 % Al2(SO4)3) with a small proportion of Purified Talc BP.
CAS numbers: Aluminium Sulphate: 17927-65-0; Talc: 14807-96-6.
3. Hazards identification
General: Active is mild acid and a potential irritant. It may release sulphurous / acidic fumes above about 6000C.
4. First-aid measures
Ingestion: Poisoning by ingestion is unlikely in view of nature of dosage and quantities involved. However in cases of accidental ingestion wash out mouth with water but do not induce vomiting. If patient is conscious give water to drink, but do not give drinks to an unconscious patient. It patient feels unwell seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Inhalation is very unlikely with product in form supplied. However if dust is inhaled remove victim to fresh air immediately, allow to rest and keep warm. If recovery is not rapid seek medical assistance.
Skin contact: Drench affected area immediately with clean water. Remove contaminated
clothing and launder before re-use. If large areas of skin are involved or irritation persists seek medical assistance.
Eye contact: Injury may be chemical or physical due to impact or scratching. Remove contact lenses. Immediately flush eye(s) with clean cold water or eyewash for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention at once. Treat as a chemical burn if appropriate.
5. Fire-fighting measures
General risks: In general risks are as bulk quantities of relatively inert plastic components and packaging. Aluminium sulphate is non-flammable and non-oxidising but toxic sulphurous / acidic fumes are liberated above about 6000C.
Extinguishing media: Use an extinguisher appropriate to source of the fire.
Special risks: Aluminium sulphate may release sulphurous / acidic fumes at high temperatures.
Special procedures: Fire-fighting personnel should wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemically resistant protective clothing. Do not allow large quantities of aluminium sulphate to enter water courses.
6. Accidental release measures
Personal precautions: Protect skin and eyes from solid or solution with suitable clothing,
Spillage: Low-volume quantities of the product can be disposed of via the ordinary household or non-hazardous waste systems. Treat large quantities as chemical waste and contact local authority.
Environmental: In small quantities components are not considered deleterious to the general environment.
7. Handling and storage
Handling: Handle in correct packaging. Use only according to product instructions. Do not lick or ingest any material. Do not eat or smoke whilst handling. Practise good personal hygiene.
Storage: Store in a cool dry place.
8. Exposure controls / personal protection
Respiratory protection: None required in product form supplied.
Eye protection: Not generally necessary if used in accordance with product instructions, but beware of introduction of the material to the eyes. If large quantities are handled use goggles.
Skin protection: Product is intended for use on skin if used according to instructions, but unnnecessary or excessive contact should be avoided.
9. Physical and chemical properties (chemical ingredients only)
Appearance: White or off-white solid.
Odour: Odourless.
pH value: Solutions are slightly acidic, with pH dependent on concentration.
Viscosity: Not applicable.
Freezing point: Not applicable.
Melting point: 1100 - 1150C, with loss of water of crystallisation.
Boiling point: Not available.
Flash point: Not applicable.
Autoinflammability: Not applicable.
Explosive limits: Not applicable.
Oxidising properties: Non-oxidising.
Vapour pressure: Not available but very low as this is an ionic solid with a small VP component from water of crystallisation at higher temperatures.
Density: Not available.
Solubility: Very soluble in water; practically insoluble in lower alcohols; insoluble in fats, oils and other hydrophobic materials.
Partition coefficient: Not available, but expected to be negligibly low for n-octanol / water system.
Refractive index: Not available.
Other data: Acts as weak acid. Slight tendency of aqueous solutions to hydrolyse to aluminium oxide / hydroxide and sulphuric acid.
10. Stability and reactivity
General: Solid product is stable for long periods if kept dry and at ambient temperatures. Legal shelf-life of product 60 months.
Conditions to avoid: Moisture and high temperatures, which may lead to decomposition.
Materials to avoid: Strong alkalis, chlorites, hypochlorites, sulphites, cyanides, sulphides, galvanised surfaces, and certain metals and alloys.
Decomposition: At higher temperatures water of crystallisation may be lost, leaving higher proportions of the anhydrous aluminium sulphate component. At very high temperatures the material releases sulphurous / acidic fumes.
11. Toxicological information (chemical ingredients only)
Effects: Low acute toxicity. Can be mildly irritating to skin.. Possible severe conjunctival irritation and corneal damage. Irritation and possible damage to throat and lungs from dust if this is produced.
12. Ecological information
General: Excessive discharge to the aquatic environment should be avoided as there may be adverse local effects arising from acidic properties. There may be some clogging of breathing organs of small aquatic species due to aluminium oxide / hydroxide suspensions.
13. Disposal considerations
Products: Waste must be disposed of in accordance with Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991. Check with local authority.
Packaging: Waste must be disposed of in accordance with Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991. Packaging consists generally of low toxicity plastics, paper and cardboard in small quantities.
14. Transport information
Products: These products do not fall into any of the UN Dangerous Goods Classifications as listed in UK Statutory Instrument 1996 No 2092 (The Carriage of Dangerous Goods (Classification, Packaging and Labelling) and Use of Transportable Pressure Receptacles Regulations 1996).
15. Regulatory information
General: Products are intended for medicinal use and sold in accordance with various national medicines regulations. They must be treated as medicines, with appropriate reference to instructions. They are supported by medicinal Product Licence (PL 4286 / 0002) issued by the UK Medicines& Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
16. Other information
General: Refer to special notes in section 1.
Uses: If used as in section 15 products are not considered dangerous and, without prejudice to the foregoing, no special handling or transport procedures are required.
